Three Wheeled Buggies
Three-wheeled buggies are ideal for walking around the neighborhood or jogging. Their compact design makes them easy to maneuver, even in tight spaces.
For a smooth ride, go for a pram with air-filled tyres. Also, look for models with 360deg front swivel wheels. They are prone, however to punctures. Be prepared with an emergency repair kit.
Frame made of sturdy material
The latest figures have been released that show that the three-wheeled buggie which was a symbol of the decade of more money than wisdom - is in steep decline. They have been replaced by four-wheelers which can handle a wider range of terrain, while also looking swanky and being easy to push.
The general rule is that the bigger the wheels, the easier it will be for your buggy to deal with bumpy and rough pavements. Having larger wheels both front and back makes it much easier to maneuver and more stable when walking downhill or over difficult terrain.
MFM reviewer Kath tried the buggy out with an infant and a toddler and found it to be extremely robust. It was able to withstand grass, cobbles and rough pavements as well as dirt tracks and kerbs. She said "it is sturdy to push and is very stable when you're on rough terrain. The tyres, that are inflatable and need to be pumped up occasionally, have built-in suspension. This was extremely comfortable for my children.
Another thing to think about is the seat size and shape. You want the seat to be big enough to allow your child to be comfortable and allow them to lie down. Certain three-wheel buggies have the option of reclining completely, while others only allow for an adult facing one.
The Roma Atlas is a great alternative for off-road or muddy walks. This buggy is ideal for a single child from birth, and can be adapted to accommodate two children as your family grows. It is suitable for toddlers and infants from birth to age 4, and includes a bumper with a rain cover, an upgraded 5-point harness, and a large padded seat. The storage options are good as well, with a decent-sized basket, zip pockets in the hood and an easy-to-access pouch on the rear of the seat unit.
Larger wheels
Larger wheels will give your buggy greater stability when driving on rough terrain. This is especially beneficial for buggies designed for off-road use. Additionally, they allow you to maneuver the pushchair in tight spaces. Some three-wheeled buggies feature wheels that swivel on the front to help you navigate tight corners. Others are designed for running and have fixed wheels that lock to provide increased speed and stability. This can also help when you crash into the roots of a tree or stray curb, since the front wheel will rise up a bit to prevent you from hitting it.
Many 3 wheeled pushchairs have air-filled tyres that allow them to handle a wide range of terrains. They are also more flexible than 4 wheelers. They also tend to be lighter. They are prone to punctures, so you'll need to have an repair kit and spare inner tube on hand.
Some of our favourite 3-wheelers include the Mountain Buggy Core and Venicci Carbo Lux. These buggies, as per MFM's Kath, have larger wheels, which, she says "perform well on grass, gravel roads and market town cobbles" and are able to go up or down kerbs. They also have a suspension system that, in her words "smoothes out bumps with great efficiency".
The drawback of having larger wheels is that they can make some buggies quite wide and can struggle to fit through narrow spaces. This is a problem if you're using it as a jogger or you need to be able to get through narrow doorways when out and about. The majority of models come with compact folding options that allow you to remove the front wheels and store them in a more compact manner.
Easy to manoeuvre
One of the primary benefits to a three wheel buggy is that it can be much more maneuverable especially with a child on the way. The way they are built ensures that the front wheels turn on a dime and are extremely easy to maneuver and are ideal for difficult terrain such as parks, cobbles or bumpy pavements, as well as dirt tracks.
MFM reviewer Kath tested a 3 wheeler with her infant and toddler and said: "The Terrain was a delight to maneuver on the terrain with the swivel rear wheel being particularly helpful. I was also amazed by how well it handled kerbs when using the hand-operated break. It was extremely stable when for descending or on uneven terrain."
The only drawback to this great maneuverability, is that the larger wheels of the 3 wheel buggy can sometimes make it difficult to squeeze into tight spaces. This is something you need to be aware of when you live in one of the cities. If this is a concern then a 4-wheel buggy may be better for you.
